Mom infuriated by image, 'cackling laugh,' but store owner says it's ID'd as 'Evilstick'
An Ohio mother is alarmed that what she thought was a “princess wand”
turned out to be something more, with a “cackling laugh” and an image
of a young girl slitting her wrist.
But the store manager suggests she should have reviewed the product
more carefully before purchasing it, since, after all, it is called the
“Evilstick.”
See a report from local WTSP-TV:The concerns are being raised by Nicole Allen, who told the station
the dollar-store product came with a piece of foil, and when it came
off, there was a “disturbing image of a girl cutting her wrists with a
knife.”
“I want to know how they think it’s suitable for a child,” she said.
The wand promises “wonderful music,” and magic and fairies.
But its image is accompanied by a “cackling laugh” and flashing lights, according to the report.
The pinkish-orange scepter-style wand was purchased for Allen’s 2-year-old from the $1.00 Store in Kettering, Ohio.
The store’s owner, Amar Moustafa, suggested customers note the name of the toy.
The Dayton Daily News said another Dayton resident visited the same
store and purchased an Evilstick himself to verify the reports. He found
that the Chinese-made toys featured a number of different pictures, and
he had to sort through two racks of Evilsticks to find one with the
same ‘cutting girl’ image.”
The paper said the toy “resembles typical dollar store off-brand
merchandise, which is not infrequently unusual, foreign-made, poorly
labeled, or otherwise different from non-discount merchandise found at
larger retailers.”
Jim Hoft at the Gateway Pundit noted the product was marked “for children ages three and up.”
